Okay, for a couple years now an online buddy of mine (Lex) and I have been trying to find where all the art on the 1975 and 1977 Marvel Slurpee cups originated.

These cups were available from 7-11 and Kolee (whatever that is) when you bought a slurpee during that time. They have some nice pics of most of the Marvel characters of that time and just like the Marvel Value stamps all the art was originally done for some other medium.

The trick is that not all the art was orignially published in the comics or mags. Some are from promo art, unpublished covers, portfolios, FOOM, T-Shirts, Posters, etc. Since Lex and I are Bronze-Age junkies together we probably have about 85-90% of all Marvel comics during that era.

Anyway, we have IDed about 95% of the 1975 cups and around 90% of the 1977 cups but are now at an impasse. What I am proposing is a contest of sorts to see if the knowlegdable people on this board can help us complete this labor of love. In all there less than 10 cups out of around 110 total cups that we have yet to nail down.

Okay so here is the deal... I will be posting pics of the cups in this thread along with all I know about the art and my theories on its origin. The prices to be had are comics that I have but are not in my collecting focus. These range from Golden-Age readers to Modern stuff and everything in-between. Here is how I hope this will work-

Once you post the information or PM me about any of the cups pictured you will receive an e-mail list of the comics to choose from (over 150 different issues) and depending on what you contribute you will get up to 5 comics shipped free of charge. Here is how you get them-

1. If you can confirm where the art is from you will be able to choose 3 comics.
2. If you post clues that lead me or someone else to ID the art-you get 1 comic.
3. If you post a pic of the art-you get one comic.
4. If you come up with #1 and #3 you will get a bonus comic for a total of five comics.

Since this has gotten a bit long I will post the pic on the next post.

Interesting! This is something I know virtually nothing about, so hopefully this thread will take of that! waving

Okay here are some pics of the 1st cup. It is a 1977 Conan cup and it looks like a John Buscema Conan to me. The other art around it may or may not be from the same origin so in this case if you ID one part of the cup you still get 3 comics and the other parts are still in play. If they are from the same issue you will only get one additional comic (no double dipping on the same issue). The figures around Conan include some serpentine looking thing (Dragon) a Skull figure (Thulsa Doom?), a leopard, some structures and some other funky formations. Based on this I have the following thoughts...

1. Check Conan the Barbarian numbers 48, 50, 57, and 59 as they all have some elements from above.
2. Check Savage Sword of Conan before 1977.
3. Check any pin-ups in either series.
4. Look at what Conan is wearing and his shield... this may narrow it down to a certain story arc and/or series.
Remember all the art has to be sometime before end of year 1977.

I will post a better pic of the Conan figure when I get home... this is what I have right now.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

P.S. Lex and I are compiling a checklist of all the cups and there is no site with pics of all the cups. Although these are not comics they are comics related... interested in a Gallery? Wink

I don't have any good scans of the other cups with me at work but I will post the 1977 Draula cup tonight. That one should be a lot easier if you have a TOD Collection.

Does anybody have Savage Sword of Conan #14-17? There were some pin-ups of Conan in those issues and also keep an eye out for the Kull face in this 1975 cup-

We think this is a pin-up or part of a portfolio by John Severin but have yet to see it.

Here is the next cup that has yet to be IDed... it is the 1977 Dracula cup. This one should be fairly easy if you have the TOD run. It is definitely Gene Colan although the Dracula face is very detailed. There is also a possibility this could be from the Dracula Lives! Magazine series though I doubt it. Don't forget the Giant-Size issues of Dracula and Chillers as well. Wink

There was also the Tom of Dracula magazine which went for a few issues after the original comic series was cancelled. nerd

Your right but that was from 1979 and the cup is from 1977.

The next cup is the Black Widow from 1977. I have checked almost all her appearance is Daredevil, Champions, Avengers, MTU, MTIO, and Lex has checked out her series in Amazing Adventures. Her early TOS and Avengers appearances had her old costume.

I know she had a pin-up in "The Superhero Women" book from 1977... anybody have this? Any ideas are welcome.

Did anybody get the Conan one? It looks REALLY familiar to me. That blue tentacle/skeleton head guy. I'll look around this weekend if I get a chance.

Colan was associated with Black Widow's depiction for a while, but I suspect that it is Dave Cockrum aping the Colan style.

I was poking around the web, and read a suggestion that maybe some of the art on these cups came from the FOOM magazine from Marvel. I'm betting this would be a good place to look for the Conan & Kull art:

Yes, and Lex has found several pics in them already. Some of these are tough to come by though.

BTW, thanks for the banner link on the main page... hopefully that will bring a few more eyes to the thread! Mr. Green Great Job as always!
